“I’m a photographer, video artist and sometimes curator, I volunteered at Colour Box Studio co-ordinating their public art program in 2013. As an artist its been such a great platform for meeting inspiring creatives and people interested in arts based in the west. This has also given me opportunities to exhibit my artwork in solo and group exhibitions both with CBS and beyond which has really helped me develop my arts practice. As a curator we were able to exhibit so many artists through the public art program alone – everything from performance, paste ups, sculpture, installations and video projections! It was a great opportunity to showcase amazing artists in unique spaces, being a part of the supportive crew at CBS gave me heaps of arts admin and events skills. Thanks Colour Box Studio! ” – Artist, Shae Rooke:

“Colour Box Studio is meaningful, relevant and needed. Run by local ‘Westie’ artists, under the direction of Amie Batalibasi, CBS provides opportunities and a more importantly, a community, for a variety of artistic disciplines. I’ve worked with this organisation on a number of levels, as a workshop facilitator, a photographer and as part of the pop up shop. What stands out most for me is the sincerity, dedication and enthusiasm that CBS have for the artists they work with, the wider community they involve and the events and workshops they provide. I really hope that more people catch on and get involved with the great stuff they are doing.” Photographer and Educator Rachel Main:

Colour Box Studio has been pivotal to building the community arts and creative scene in Melbourne’s west. It’s provided fantastic opportunities for local artists and makers to connect with the broader community, championed the ethos of art for everyone, and welcomed anyone with a love of making and ideas into its creative community. Thanks to Amie and everyone at Colour Box Studio for their unwavering support of my creative practice and for their enthusiasm, dedication and love of all things creative.” Jessica Dean, writer and author of children’s book Gertrude, West Art Now:

CBS has grown into such a dynamic and important space for artists living and working in the western suburbs of Melbourne. My time there was instrumental to my growth as an independent artist and community arts worker. I love watching CBS grow and respond to its community from Cairns where I live now and hope to collaborate with CBS again in the future!!” Arts Managers & Producer Lia Pa’apa’a.

Workshop Facilitators

“Colour Box Studio is an organisation that supports creative industries, builds community, and enhances perceptions of local makers, designers and artists by connecting members of these industries with each other and potential consumers… You wouldn’t think that they do all they do on so few core staff members!” – Kirri-mae Sampson, Workshop Facilitator.

“Colour Box Studio has been a great experience for me. I’ve had opportunities to get my products out there in front of the general public, as well as opportunities to develop my teaching skills by running workshops. There is always something fresh and new happening at Colour Box Studio, and a community of amazing people who keep it running.” Liz Doust – Ambette

“Colour Box Studio helps me bring my arts practice closer to the public. I get to meet like-minded people who have helped me develop and promote my craft. I enjoy facilitating workshops and sharing my skills with others” Ida Suod – Studio 941

Rohani & Rosalie Osman

“Colour Box Studio is such a great outlet for emerging and independent young artists and designers.  By offering a variety of workshops and events, and being a forum for the community with its cultural diversity, they have brought great life to the community arts scene.” Rohani & Rosalie Osman – The Super Rad Nail Sisters

Pop Up Shop Program artists:

“I participated in the Colour Box design & craft pop-up shop around xmas time. It was a great opportunity to have my prints and cards in a Bricks & Mortar store, and test out which items were popular in that context. The pop-up shop had a really eclectic mix of artists and designers participating, including a few of my fave Melbourne designers. It was a real honour to be included and display my work alongside other such talented designers. Amie B and her team have been so resourceful, supportive, and organised, breathing life into a new innovative space in Footscray, and creating new opportunities for artists and the local community. Can’t wait to see what they do each month!” Tali Gal-onMilk and Cookies

“Colour Box Studio [Pop Up Shop] was really fun and interesting project to be involved in. Both the organisers and artists involved were really friendly and positive and we took a lot away from the experience.” Anna BlanfordAble and Game

“As an artist working from home you can get a bit insular, and don’t necessarily find it easy to meet other creative types. As well as being good exposure for me, The Colour Box Studio Pop Up Shop was a great way to meet and interact with other local artists, which opens up opportunities for collaboration and sharing creative ideas. The community aspect was great too, it really felt like those of us involved were coming together to make something special.” Hanna ManciniHannakin

“Colour Box Studio has supported us a great deal in our local Footscray community. CBS helped create more awareness in local labels including ours, Aacute, in the west side. The Pop Up shops were great and we got a chance to utilise the lovely studio for our fashion photoshoot. Their guest speaker forum (as part of Fashion Month) was fantastic, covering many issues in our handmade and fashion industry and we got a lot of value out of that night (even though it was free!).
CBS is a great community initiative.” Julie and Kelly TranAacute

Digital Media Program Artists

“The team at Colour Box Studio are fantastic! It was a great experience to talk with fellow creatives and to show work in such intimate, vibrant and supportive space.” Tess Hamilton, Adriana Bernardo, Mel Acker – The Tam Projects

“Some of my video work was included in Colour Box Studio’s Digital Media Month through its nightly projections, Façade. The hour-long program was absolutely mesmerising, featuring work from 13 artists, and I was delighted to be involved. Colour Box Studio is a little oasis of energy and creativity in an almost empty part of Nicholson St. The crew of volunteers are always smiling and the vibe at the pop-up shops and workshops is fun and inclusive, not to mention inspiring. Colour Box Studio, thanks again for supporting artists, welcoming the community and being generally awesome! I’m looking forward to the programs you have planned for the next few months!” Kathryn Goldie, Writer and Filmmaker.

“I was lucky enough to be asked to curate the digital media exhibit at Colour Box Studio in February. I relished the opportunity to show some truly wonderful work by both local and international artists and filmmakers. In many cases this would not have been seen in Melbourne otherwise and the fact we screened this work in fabulous, vibrant Footscray was super rewarding. Its great to see creative spaces like Colour Box consolidate themselves in the west and I really hope there are many more wonderful events and exhibits to come. Good Luck Colour Box!” William Head – Yay Tractor
