Colour Box Studio presents a creative and ethically minded textile workshop with designer and maker Kirri-Mae Sampson of Kirri-MaDe:
“More than 500,000 tonnes of textile waste are buried in Australian landfill each year. With amounts like this, it makes you wonder if even a small amount of this waste could be used as a resource. I have the advantage of working for a charity who deal, in part, with clothing waste. I began purchasing T-shirts that were destined for rag trade or the tip because they were not in good enough condition to be sold on as they were. From this, experimenting ensued and my “t-shirt to treasure” statement necklaces were born.”
This workshop comes directly from Kirri-Mae’s practice of upcycling preloved t-shirts into statement jewellery pieces. Learning about best ways to deconstruct the t-shirt as well as macrame techniques to utilise in the making, participants will be able to create something beautiful, with the added advantage of redirecting textile waste from Australia’s landfills.
• a variety of macrame knots in order to take a pre-loved t-shirt and transform it into a beautiful necklace;
A t-shirt will be provided for each participant to learn with, although you are also welcome to bring one of their own if there is a colour you are particularly interested in working with.
THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT. For the next workshop listings: click here.
