Tessa and Andrew are so inspired by their kids, they’ve named their label Coco & Max after them! We chatted to the design duo about their return to Melbourne after a stint away, what they’re currently working on, and what their brand is about. You can pick up some of Coco & Max’s super unique womens- and menswear at Colour Box Studio’s Spring Pop Up Shop running until the 4th of November. Find more details about the Pop Up Shop here.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
Coco & Max is a design duo – Tessa from Melbourne and Andrew from London. We produce bold and dynamic designs, manufactured entirely in Melbourne. Preaching high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, all collections are limited edition and numbered by hand, reinforcing the importance of originality and self-expression.
How did you start your creative business/arts practice and why?
We had been designing for other companies for the past 15 years, so thought it was time we followed our passion and started our own label (and family) and the best place to do this was back in Melbourne.
Where did you grow up and has it influenced what you create?
Definitely – I think we’re still finding our feet back in Melbourne. Everything influences what we design – music, kids books, the weather, and architecture.
What is your current project?
We do rolling collections every year and we’re just about to drop our SS17. This year it’s an extension of the ‘Wild Things’ theme and continues to play with twisted seams and all our in-house graphics. We are also starting to sell limited edition prints of the art work behind the graphics of the clothing.
Who or what is your inspiration?
Our children! Coco & Max.
What do you do to feel creative?
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming – as Dory says.
What can visitors expect to see from you in the Colour Box Studio Spring Pop Up Shop?
Some exclusive pieces that won’t be on sale anywhere else until winter 2018!
Where can we see more of your work?
On our web site – www.cocoandmax.com.au and at the Rose Street Artists Market in Fitzroy every Saturday.
