Hayley & Emily of Silly Rabbit are featured in the Colour Box Studio Summer Pop Up Shop until 21 December 2013.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
We’ve known each other for over 15 years, we went to High School together and have pretty much been besties ever since. We both ended up studying Textile Design and since graduating Emily has worked largely within the homewares industry, designing for labels such as Linen House, Aura Home, Hiccups and Marie Claire. Hayley spent several years working as a textile designer for children’s bed linen and clothing, then in 2010 went back to uni to complete a BA of Fine Art at RMIT. She did her Master of Fine Art the following year and now works across the two disciplines of painting and textile design.
How did you start your creative business and why?
It started one night with a conversation over pizza and wine, talking about how we’ve always wanted to start our own label together and design for ourselves. The timing was right to make it happen and we just sort of got the ball rolling from there.
Tell us about your past projects. What has been your most treasured creation?
We’re still pretty new at this (our 1st birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks!) so we would have to say developing the first range and launching the business, it was a pretty big moment for us and we were super proud of our efforts.
Where did you grow up and has it influenced what you create?
We grew up in Melbourne and I think living here and being a part of the creative scene definitely influences what you make as there is just so much good stuff happening around you.
What is your current project?
We’re currently working on a brand new range of designs for Silly Rabbit so keep an eye out for them next year!
Who or what was your inspiration?
Our inspiration comes from lots of different places, but the things we love the most are vintage fabrics, abstract art and design and anything with lots and lots of colour!
Where do you feel most creative?
It’s probably not in any one particular place but anywhere we can relax, focus on our work and surround ourselves with lots of inspiring resources and art materials.
What can visitors to expect to see from you in the Colour Box Studio Summer Pop Up Shop?
We have a small selection of all of our products in the shop which includes some of our favourite cushions; ‘Bowie’, ‘Moonshadow’, ‘Four Square’ and ‘Untitled No.5’ as well as our Tea Towels, Art Prints, Greeting Cards and Fabric Covered Badges.
What advice would you give to those considering starting a creative business?
We would say ‘Go for it!’, but match your enthusiasm with lots of research and planning. There are heaps of resources out there for people wanting to start a creative business so learn as much as you can. And don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes as you go along.
Where can we see more of your work?
We’ll be at Craft Hatch market on November 30th and at The Lonely Hunter market on December 14th. Or you could visit one of our lovely stockists; Proforma Store and Clickon Furniture. And our website of course http://www.wearesillyrabbit.com
