ON FOOT is a guided Art Crawl and artist programs of galleries and creative spaces in Footscray including Trocadero Art Space, Five Walls Project, Bruce ARI, Knight Street Art Space, Colour Box Studio. The full tour itself starts at 12pm at Trocadero however if you would like to see what’s happening at Colour Box Studio, you can come at 3:30pm when the tour is due to arrive and join the last leg.

TORIKA BOLATAGICI – Pop Up Community Reading Room (1-8 June, Colour Box Studio)
Informed and inspired by the collection of artist reference material at the Stuart Hall Library (Institute of Visual in London) and other art archives, (Asia Art Archive, ‘Ulu’ulu, Austalian Centre for Asia Pacific Art), Torika will present a prototype for the seed that she hopes will eventually grow into a community reading room located here in Melbourne. The collection will host a range of published resources specialiszing in visual arts culture and cultural identity – with a special focus on contemporary work from Oceania and other established and emerging diasporic communities in Australia.
Not only will the archive create a repository of research material and artist folders, but the space will also host a regular reading group and workshop and lectures for artists and researchers whose work engages with contamporary international visual culture.
Biography – Torika Bolatagici
Torika Bolatagici was born in Tasmania and spent the early years of her life living between Hobart, Sydney and her fathers’s village – Suvavou, Fiji.
Her interdisciplinary practice investigates the relationships between visual culture, human ecology and contemporary Pacific identities. Torika works across a range of media, including photography, video and mixed-media installation and her work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Aotearoa and Australia, Most recently her series Export Quality (2009/13) was presented in the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial, 20-Year Archive project.
Torika has published and presented locally and internationally about contemporary visual culture, gender, identity and thePacific and is a full-time lecturer in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University where she teaches contemporary photographic theory and practice. Torika is also a doctoral candidate in the Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales.

KATHRYN GOLDIE – Film Presentation, Artist Talk, Q & A – 1 June, Colour Box Studio
Duck Soup is a short film Kathryn wrote and directed in 2007. Its street scenes were shot largely in Footscray, at the Hong Kong BBQ restaurant in Hopkins St. It’s a short, simple film using voiceover, which has travelled to 21 festivals across eight different countries. Kathryn will show the film (duration 3 minutes and 30 seconds), have a small Q&A session and discuss how the film came about. She will also talk about her broader practice as a writer and director of short films, short plays and, increasingly, prose, and the kinds of avenues available for writers who work with performance.
Biography – Kathryn Goldie
Kathryn Goldie is a writer and film-maker. A graduate of VCA School of Film and TV, her short films have screened at 39 film festivals and her short plays have been performed at 16 Australian play festivals. She is currently writing a novel and completing studies in screenwriting at RMIT.
Her script Bodysurfer was commended in the 2010 Fellowship of Australian Writers’ National Literary Awards, and the film is the eighth she has written and directed. Her 2008 short film Steak, funded by the then-Australian Film Commission’s Raw Nerve initiative, was a finalist in the Melbourne Queer Film Festival’s City of Melbourne Awards and won Best Narrative in the RMIT Student Film Awards. Her 2007 short, Duck Soup, has screened at 21 film festivals from Sydney to San Francisco, Berlin to Mumbai. Kathryn’s short play The Kind of Man was a finalist in Short + Sweet Melbourne 2011, a festival for which she has also directed.
Her other short plays, including A Matter of Taste and Sensitivity, have been performed in Melbourne, Sydney and Armidale. Kathryn also recorded visual score Cubular Oceans for contemporary music ensemble 3 Shades Black’s 2011 Melbourne Fringe Festival show, Moving Scores, which also played in Beijing in 2012 and at the 2013 Auckland Fringe Festival. Her video art piece, Once Upon A Time in the West, was projected as part of Colour Box Studio’s Façade in February 2013.
LIZZY SAMPSON – Installation, Colour Box Studio Alleyway, 1 June
For the Colour Box Studio alleyway, Lizzy has produced a series of signs which play upon the language used by developers and government to promote the planned changes for Footscray. Taking words and slogans from both local and state government websites, along with phrases used by developers, the new signs offer absurd statements, appropriated from beurocratic visions of community development and re-contextualised for the laneway setting.

Lizzy Sampson is a Melbourne based visual artist who recently completed a Masters of Fine Art at RMIT. Central themes within her arts practice include the world of business, the notion of work, politics and the economy. Her work questions established systems, structures and values, and invites the viewer to do the same.
