ABOUT

With a mission to foster community engagement, Colour Box Studio provides a dynamic platform for artists, filmmakers, and storytellers to explore their creativity and connect with audiences. Through its curated programs and initiatives, Colour Box Studio offers a range of opportunities including workshops, events, an online artist interview series and community projects.

Initially established at a Footscray shop-front in 2012 by filmmaker and creative producer Amie Batalibasi and a team of dedicated volunteers, Colour Box Studio has become a leading force for showcasing and supporting diverse creative talents.

The Backstory

For its first five years, Colour Box Studio operated from Naarm/Melbourne’s West showcasing over 300 artists. Supported by independent community fundraising, Colour Box Studio embraced a pop-up creative programming model including a host of exhibitions, performances and creative workshops, the end-of-year Pop Up Shops and the popular Colour Box Studio Disposable Camera Project which had 100 participants in its last edition.

Today

After a hiatus that led into Melbourne’s lockdowns, Colour Box Studio relaunched in 2021 via the website’s Artist Q&A Series connecting with our creative community and audiences once more. In 2022, Colour Box Studio presented a one-day arts festival, JUNCTION, in the heart of Footscray partnering with local artists and organisation to deliver workshops, video projections and performances. Most recently, Colour Box Studio facilitated digital storytelling workshops with Wyndham City Council, and community legal literacy workshops in partnership with Arts Law and Queensland United Australian South Sea Islander Council Inc.

With new projects in development, Colour Box Studio aims to amplify the voices of underrepresented creatives, storytellers and filmmakers, working towards a more inclusive and equitable creative sector. With a deep commitment to collaboration and social impact, Colour Box Studio continues to push boundaries and inspire positive change within Naarm’s vibrant artistic landscape and beyond.
