Rachel Main is a Melbourne based artist. Rachel is a photographer, documenter, filmmaker and teacher. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) from Queensland University of Technology, and later completed a Graduate Diploma in Education at Melbourne University.
In 2010, she was one of 11 Australasian artists chosen for Melbourne Fringe Festival’s Visible City project; a live arts project where the artists collaborated to produce a range of art experiences for the festival. In 2011, she completed a one-year artist in residency at the Footscray Community Arts Centre. In 2012, she received a grant from the Maribyrnong City Council to complete the ‘This Is Mine’ project- a series of photographs, which featured locals who lived, worked and recreated in Footscray. These photographs were then printed as street posters and pasted up on walls within the community itself.
Rachel has also been involved in the Melbourne Krump community for the past 5 years and is known as ‘Lady Burn’. She was dancing for many of those years, but now contributes through filming and photographing the scene. In 2009, she directed, produced, filmed and edited Australia’s first feature-length krump documentary titled Burncity: A Journey into Melburn and Australian Krump. The film received the award for best documentary at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival 2009. Four of her krump photographs have also been collected by the State Library of Victoria and were on display for six months at the Library this year.
Rachel is also a freelance photographer and filmmaker, with a focus on music and street culture and she is currently working on a documentary about Melbourne’s Hip Hop music culture.
During all of this, she has been a high school Art and Photography teacher for the past six years and draws on her personal experiences as a multi-faceted artist to help engage her students. Rachel has also completed volunteer work in Siem Reap, Cambodia, teaching photography to former street kids and has been involved with the one eighty program, teaching photography to ‘at risk’ youth from a selection of Melbourne’s inner city housing flats.

Rachel’s workshop is open to all beginners who have a DSLR camera, this workshop will focus on the basics of photography and wean you off using AUTO mode! You will gain an understanding of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field and how to shoot in a variety of lighting situations. You will also be involved in a real photo shoot with a model.
